Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are located at the back of the jaw. Due to their size and limited space, they may not erupt properly, become impacted (partially or fully), or emerge irregularly. Their abnormal positioning and hard-to-clean location can lead to complications like infections, pain, or damage to adjacent teeth. Removing them helps prevent these issues and supports long-term oral health. However, postoperative effects such as bleeding, pain and swelling may occur, as the gum and jawbone are affected. To limit these effects and prevent complications, follow this advice:

  • Apply a sterile compress to stop the bleeding, which usually stops after a few minutes. Saliva may be stained with blood for a while.
  • Use ice on the jaw (15 minutes per hour for the first 24 hours) to reduce swelling.
  • Follow your dentist’s dietary recommendations.
  • Take painkillers to relieve the pain.
  • Contact your dentist if symptoms persist or worsen.

Dr. Matthew Healy is experienced in wisdom tooth extraction and ensures a safe and comfortable procedure at the Healy-Beaconsfield Dental Clinic, with the option of oral sedation. For more complex cases, Dr. Tuan Hoang, maxillofacial surgeon, is also available at our clinic.
